I tried the Perspex route to replace the windows on Drumbeat of Devon, it was an absolute nightmare, tried everyway to cut the stupid stuff and failed every time. 😡 I ended up buying 1mm plastic sheet which cut easily and cleanly with a Stanley knife. By the time it was attached to the outer window frame it worked well 😀

Three down (just about) and one to go, these fairleads have been a real pain, talking of pane suppose Ill have to think of a way to cut the Perspex for the windows soon 😟

The masking tape came off a treat and left a nice neat line. Thanks Mark

Thanks Paul, that's one compliment I will savour after having seen your standards. Shaun

That's the next job for me Alan, it's taken some time but I've now worked out the best way to succeed is to let you lead the way and learn from that. I have no doubt that the finished product will be of an exceptional standard. I'll be away for a week or two now but will be back to abuse you soon. Shaun

Thanks for that Mark, that's what I will do.
If it doesn't work Ill come looking for you 😁

Ian, I tried the pinstriping but couldn't get it to look right over the spray rails.

fireboat update

Too late now, but an alternative is to use vinyl pinstriping.

Great job as usual Alan.

HI Alan

You need to peel the masking tape bent 180 degrees, so you are pulling it back along itself, don't try to lift it straight up, it will pickup and splinter your line. Do this when the last coat is still wet and tacky, this will give the underlying coats a little flexibility.

I have been putting this off for ages, the dreaded white line on the hull.
So the hull was masked up and the white line painted with Humbrol enamel, that's when I wished I had worked it out to paint over the red instead of the black, it has three coats on up until now and I guess it will still need another one.

The question is, do I remove the masking tape while the last coat is still tacky or wait until the paint is hard and risk pulling some of the white line off 💭

No problem with the humour Roger, just couldn't think of a witty reply 😁 abuse is reserved for Shaun (flack) to dish out 😁

Thanks for the encouragement Paul, I bought this boat at the Haydock show last year as a Winter project and here we are a year later and it still isn't finished, surprising how long it takes me to make all the little bits.

nice work Alan, its nice to see some boats being made true to the original design, but with a degree of personal interpretation, meaning they will not all be identical, if you know what I mean (beginning to ramble!).

It would be nice to get them all together, and get "us" all together to share stories!

Paul

(note to myself, you are catching up with posts, must post more often!)

Forgive my previous attempt at humour Alan the monitors like the rest oof the boat look fantastic, a true work of art.

fireboat update

Some modellers licence has been used and the fire monitors are now finished, painted and fitted, they are working monitors, well the will be if I fit a pump.
Mostly made out of aluminium and brass, the oval bit in the middle of the body is made out of three pieces of plasticard as I don't have the skills to make this bit on the lathe.
Thread lock was used to fix the brass tubes, seems to have worked alright.
#95

fireboat update

HI Alan have just finished my monitirs and I used 5 min epoxy but thinking about it superglue would do as well. Nice looking monitors, nearly as good as min lol
Go well Roger
#94

fireboat update

I have made a start on the fire hydrants, the top parts are made but I still have to make the bodies, probably out of plasticard slid up the down tube.

The brass tubes are a push fit in the bits but not a tight fit, I don't really want to solder them so I was wondering if thread lock would fasten them in permanently. Does anyone know if this would work?

I had a little go with a mouthful of water to see if they squirted, yep they squirt, all over the wife 😁

Thanks Ian

Been busy making lots of swarf again 😁 , and ended up with a Sampson post and two bollards for the fireboat, to be fitted when the deck is painted.

Cracking job as usual Alan.

I hope we will see it on the water, it almost looks too good to get wet!

The lifebelts have been painted and brackets made out of plasticard. These have been painted silver and fastened with small aluminium rivets, held in place with a dab of superglue on the underside of the hatch.

The hull is now masked up so that the superstructure sides and any other grey bits can be painted, been putting this off for a while 😟

Working opening hatches with brass hinges and handles- it doesn't get much better than that. Well done Alan I'm Impressed. 😋

As to the sunken fishing boat I really hope it hasn't spoilt what was an incredible model. 😭

Enough of the praise - my next reply to your post will revert to the mickey taking norm. 😁
#88

fireboat update

Sunday saw my fishing boat (build blog, inshore fishing boat) capsize, turn turtle and sink to the bottom of the lake, my fault for taking out too much ballast. 😭 😭 😭
Now an old fellow walking through the park in over large waders carrying a large pole and a grabber is not a pretty sight, especially for small children. 💭
Boat recovered, stripped, hosed out and left to dry in the sun, lots of deck stuff still at the bottom of the lake 😟 all electrics washed, dried and now working 😀

So, while the boat dries out, a bit more done to the fire boat. I have stuck all those little bits of wood in place that hold the bar that supports the scramble nets, fitted the hinges and handles to the hatches, made a handrail and positioned those vent thingies

Guess it's the larger ones then Shaun, just need to paint them to look as good as yours, better make some brackets to hold them in place as well.

Hey Alan,

If its any help this is the size I am using. Had to be different though and use a bit of orange and string to jazz them up a bit 😁

Just can't make up my mind with these, two sizes of lifebelts, but which ones to use?

The new framework made for the cabin roof, this time out of plasticard.
If it is jumped on again by a runaway project, it should bounce off. 😁

If they have got to go I am sure you will get a good price for the ladders!!!!

I guess they will be going to the work bench Alan? it was probably jealous of all the attention you give other boats and recruited the Ninja's to wreak revenge! 😁

Throw it I did not, I kept very calm 😁
But it is getting out of hand, the ladders are full of projects, they are going to have to go.

It was obviously attracted to the shiny paint finish 😁

I echo Paul's post 😭
#72

fireboat update

There is this project boat that lives on my ladders in the workshop roof. Today it took it upon itself to jump off the ladders and onto my fire boat. 😭 After I had wiped away the tears I took this photo.
It could have been worse, it could have been the wheelhouse roof.

fireboat update

So, back to the fireboat after refurbishing the boat with no name.
The forward cabin roof was painted about six weeks ago with two coats of sanding sealer, about four coats of primer and four coats of gloss, rubbing down between each coat and I was very pleased with the finish, but now on close inspection I could just see the grain of the wood showing. 😭
According to a chap that knows more about painting than I will ever know says it is often called creeping, he explained that every time you put a coat of paint on, it softens the paint underneath in order to key in, this allows the paint to creep into any defects underneath, and so it goes on with each coat, so if I rubbed it down and resprayed it would end up the same 😭
So, I have rubbed it down with 1200 wet and dry, then cutting compound, then Teecut and finally car polish. I now have a very smooth and shiny cockpit roof. 😀
Also made one of the hatches for the centre cabin roof out of plasticard

HI Tom, it's an old model boat that I am restoring.
Just started a build blog on it.
140 miles, that's a ways to go, just get there and find you have left y our screw driver at home 😁

HI Alan, I can see what you mean about them looking too big. But when I saw the pictures of the 93 & 94 in action in the photo's even the men on those look too big for the boat. Or does the boat looks too small for them?

You also say you are restoring a 1960's boat. What is it you have? I also have a 1962
boat. it is a 21ft cabin cruiser, it was built for the . it was made by Norwegian Fjords a company called Ancas. it has a Volvo Penta B16 1600cc petrol engine with an AQ80 out drive.
The engine is what was put in the Volvo PV 444. I have it moored in Potter Heigham on the Norfolk Broads. I am also slowly trying to renovate her. I have the engine in pieces at the moment as I had a cracked block. I have put in another block and now have the refit the head then all the ancillaries.

I am also in the process or rubbing her down and painting. My biggest problem is I live in Dartford Kent and I am 140 miles away from her. I only get an occasional long weekend so not very long to work on her.
Her name is Sea Queen II. Her picture is the one on the top of my posts.
I hope I haven't bored you, I look forward to hearing about yours.
Regards Tom.

I went through the "must have a figure" bit too, on my 3 footer, at The time I was quite proud, but after time, got fed up of them. They just looked too big, even though they were the correct scale. I found a slightly smaller figure that I modified, he looked ok in the black water proof, I never used him though. I reckon the 1/16 figures would look ok on the big boat. Surprising that the Fireboat was quite small, and many people get the scale horribly wrong, with helicopters etc sitting on them: grin:

HI Tom, here are my excuses, holidays, my birthday, visitors, allotments and shear laziness.
Also been working on a restoration of a 60s boat.
The sailor, well sorry to say he has been laid to rest 😁
Here is a photo of the load hailer that I made last week for the fire boat, it just needs a bracket making now.

Sick bay! - I think you've got it all wrong, its almost certain a crematorium job. 😁

I think you've managed to get a job lot of those Turnigy AquaStar 3974-2200KV motors off the back of a lorry. 😑

HI boatshed, it's a big bad boy, isn't it 😁 it's in a 34" crash tender, as for a prop size, that will be trial and error, probably start with a 40mm.

Little sailor, well he fell off the shelf and broke an arm, oh, and his foot fell off 😁 back to sick bay

Nice motor, I saw one of those at Wings& Wheels show last year on the HobbyKing stand. But you cannot buy from them there, only buy on line.
what size is the crash Tender 34" or 46" and what size prop will you use ?

How is you little sailor coming on?
