I'm so sorry to my build blog followers that I haven't updated on my progress for some time, but the build has taken a back seat for a few weeks due to changing jobs, but over the last week or so I've picked the build of the superstructure back up again.
Just following the instructions at the moment so as to get to the build level where I can start the paint job before adding all the detailing bits.
I have decided not to build the structure roof's with planks as the instructions show, but to use balsa sheet as it looks a lot easier..These were "bent" into shape over the skeleton with a little help from some steam from the kettle. It really does work well in forming the shape....but also burns your fingers if you're not careful. Another lesson learnt... wear some gloves!
So with basic build done I started on the paint job following the colours of the hull design.
I prepared it the same as the hull with light bals filler first then rubbed down so as to fill most of the wood grain imperfections, then a cout of filler primer, followed by primer, then paint and finally a couple of layers of clear laquer. All with a lot of sanding a smoothing inbetween.
Its not bad!
Now waiting for the weekend to prepare and install windows, pulpit rails and cabin floors with some left over mahogany. I can't wait!😎

So, superstructure is really taking shape now the windows are in and the top screen has been added. Next stage is to build and add the Pulpit on the bow and the rest of the handrails and seating.
I am not looking forward to the pulpit as have no welding equipment or skills here.
Another challenge then to see if solder will hold the brass rails in place. If not it will be constructed with expoxy resin and then painted over.
Onwards and upwards.

Stuart the ply base jig you've made looks ideal, however you need to support the uprights so they cant move this can be done using small crocodile clips the type you get with a heavy cast base for electronics work. Deal with one joint at a time and silver solder the joint making sure your pieces are spotlessly clean (don't use abrasive paper, as the adhesive used to retain the grit can contaminate a clean joint) use fine grade steel wool 0000 grade. flux the joint, clean the solder and dip in flux. Heat the joint slowly watching for the flux bubbling and then becoming transparent this is then followed by the Joint starting to turn dull red. this is the point you start to introduce the solder to the heat - gently touch the joint with the solder and it should immediately melt onto the joint, remove the solder immediately. move the next joint.

At last the boat is finished to a point where I can take it out for its maiden voyage. It passed leak and floatation tests in the bath and all electric function as they should. Now to show it off in open water on the Boating Lake in Bushy Park, Kingston upon Thames.
I'm hoping for a bit of sun and not too much wind to create too many waves at first, until I get used to handling it.

With battery fully charged and with great anticipation, Rosalie had her first voyage on the Bushy Park Boating lake a couple of weekends ago. It went very well, but not as fast as I was expecting and at full speed, the battery started to run down and affect the speed after about 20 mins running. It looked good though and there were plenty of onlookers, the turns looked spectacular and mirrored exactly what would happen on the real thing!.
Next thing is to reduce the weight a bit to see if it can go faster or play with the prop size....... what fun!!

I like the remarks a lot regarding the overall speed of Rosalie on the water. My trouble is I'm somewhat of a speed freak. I personally push to get as much speed I can from a model boat and then I can use less throttle if I wish to make her look realistic. This is why I like the Huntsman and the Vosper type hulls. I do have a Proboat Miss Geico and at full throttle she will turn on the water with virtually no roll at all. But a I say I'm a speed freak and would get as much as I can from her. If we all thought the same I think it would be a sad world. I am being offered a Yacht hull and have never seen the fun in one but if I take it who knows what I will think. I don't seem to want to get slow models even at my old age. I have 2 R/C cars and they are fast. I think I might have a problem, I still feel like a kid at heart the brain is way behind the body.I think.
I've only today discovered this website and forum, so imagine my delight at finding a build blog of my little H31. It was never intended to be a beginner's model as you've discovered, Stuart, but you really have made a nice job of it - especially that bow flare, which can be a pig to do unless you approach it systematically.
There's a video of my own model at Wicksteed Park on You Tube so you can compare speeds etc. The video was kindly made by Martin 'Mayhem' Davis, so don't blame me for the music!
I understand that SLEC will now include in future kits a laser-etched 0.8mm ply deck overlay with the correct shape and spacing of the planks. The new Swordsman kit has such an overlay and really looks the business.
Yes - that pulpit does need silver-soldering. I had to learn how to do this but I had some excellent guidance from Cupalloy and now it's a doddle. I've just done another pulpit in 1/8" brass for my next project and it's come out very well first time with no problems.
That's the wonderful think about this hobby - I've been doing it for over 50 years and I still learn new things with every model. Ten years ago I'd never have used epoxy finishing resin; I'd never heard of brushless motors or LiPo batteries, and silver-soldering was something that only steam-loco builders and jewellers did.
