refurbishment of Ignotus

I can't find out what this boat is, think it is from the 50s or 60s so it is now going to be known as Ignotus.

It has a FG hull with plywood superstructure. The hull has been bashed in at the bow and then filled with what I can only describe as gunk, the plywood on the superstructure is delaminating (if that's the right word)

First job is to remove the deck so that the hull can be repaired. Using resin and filler the bow starts to take shape, well I think that's the right shape 😁

Repairs to the hull complete, so the hull is rubbed down with wet and dry and given a couple of coats of grey undercoat, using wet and dry in between coats, then a coat of white gloss, a finishing coat will be sprayed on after the spray rails have been glued in position.
Hardwood spray rails fitted using 10 min araldite and cocktail sticks to hold it in place.

The prop shaft has been removed from the hull, new bearings made and fitted at each end, then the tube was cut in two and a centre bearing fitted, the two pieces where then soldered over the centre bearing and the whole lot cleaned up.

The oiler. A sleeve was made to fit over the tube with a small bore brass tube fitted into it, after drilling a hole in the tube the sleeve was soldered in position,

Like the prop shaft mods, makes a really neat job, just a bit concerned as to how the grease gets past the centre bearing to lubricate the back half

On this boat Roger I use engine oil, it eventually seeps past the centre bearing, it ran for almost 2 hours last week and nobody noticed the very small oil slick at the start of the sail 😁

Here is the deck been glued down, those old lead acid batteries really come in handy for a job like this.

Prop shaft coupling and motor fitted

Patterns where taken from the old superstructure and a new superstructure was made out of plasticard. Quite a simple superstructure so it was easy to make.

The superstructure has been undercoated and painted, original window frames glazed and fitted, deck furniture fitted.
Boat finished, took It to the lake last Sunday and It went well, gets It's bow out of the water pretty quick and has a good turn of speed.

Back to the fireboat now 😁
