Gears

Well managed get out for a quick tinker, l had a set of gears ⚙️, again courtesy of the college and there policy of binning perfectly useful equipment. Anyway, after a bit of playing around and adjustment, I can get all 3 to turn together and even in the right direction (always a bonus). Once I get the servo attached I should then have all 3 main turrets to move together. Hopefully get some more done on both Nelson and my "recyle"project if time allows- inlaws (outlaws) have come to stay.

Hi Roger, when I was disassembling the original set up, they were fixed in place via a cup holder which in turn has a thumb screw to adjust the speed at which the original set up could work. Fortunately ,these have flat bottoms, so roughened them up before fixing to the hull with adhesive. Bonus side is that being metal they also contribute to the ballast. So that accounts for the 3 larger gears. The 2 smaller gears are held in place by the plastic handles that were part of the original setup cut down to size. The 2 smaller gears serve a dual purpose of not only acting as spacers but also ensuring that the larger gears turn in the right direction. A bit of a long winded answer to your question, hopefully you'll still be awake by the time you've reached the end of this 😁

Thanks for the reply still awake, a good description. It was obviously a very good find. And as you say they will all turn in the same direction. Like to see the finished result

Smokin '

A water vapour smoker arrived today from my daughter for my birthday. Hopefully will be able to fit this weekend. One question is:it says that a 6v battery required to operate. Any suggestions as with regards to size.

Four AA alkaline primary cells shud yield 4 to 7 hours operation at the 0.4Amp draw of the "smoker". I agree it's the simplest approach. I have several models where a pair of AA's power my navigation lights.

Our sailing site, Bluffers Park in Scarborough (the Scarborough in Ontario, Canada, clarifying for website members in other countries) has a "soft close" of parking at 7pm so this summer we have not done any night-running sessions. Perhaps in autumn tho when Night descends earlier??

    Hi Bill,
You're right😌 Old habits die hard!
I have suitably modified my post.
In future I shall try to refrain from posting in the middle of the night
or waiting up til 2am for the the new QotD💤💤💤

Ref photos: as previously posted the smoker from Hotspur that I described in some detail was removed during a major refit some time ago and went missing after two house moves. I will have to rebuild it.
The other, newer ones I bought recently have only been used for bench testing so far, and searching for the ship modellers holy grail of black smoke. The search has thus far been unsuccessful☹️ Some of the most recent units with larger reservoirs and fans are still in the boxes/bags.

So over to Chris, he has the info now
    Cheers, Doug.

And relax?

Well managed to get a bit of me time ⏲️ today, all family and relatives have returned to their respective abodes. Gave the smoke unit a dry test, all good, now to make some adjustments to fit into Nelson. A little bit more on the deck, made a school boy error with being over enthusiastic on initial playing of paint and forgetting that there would be more fixtures and fittings. Hey ho, could be worse. Getting frustrated with TRUMPETÈER instructions and the fact that there's a few phantom parts which suddenly appeared in the construction plans or simply don't exist. Plus why do they keep leaving parts out at an early stage of construction when you've already placed half of the same parts. Easy to be confused. Com but the end is in sight.

Cheers Bill, I've got an idea of using a carcass of a marker pen as a sleeve over the top of the smoker into the funnel and hopefully contain any condensation from running back into the hold 😀. Maybe if I get chance today.

Initial deck colour

It's seems to have been a long build since I started before Christmas, but there's light at the end of proverbial tunnel so to speak.
Laid down an initial base coat on the deck today. First impressions are pleasing, I'll see what the dry version looks like in the morning

Smoke and mirrors

After a time consuming hunt around the house and asking the neighbours, I finally found some flexible pipe to fit the smoke unit and link to the funnel. Unfortunately, due to the lack of room internally, I might have to forgoe my idea of having the turrets on a servo. The smoke unit is quite large both in height and width so has been located forward of the motors. Flexible tube is fixed to the funnel via two circular magnets with holes in them to allow the smoke through, plus it makes it easier for access as the tube will be able to disconnect. Initial trial is good, will have a ponder tonight on how to fit the rest of the rc in and if I can work a way of getting the turrets to move.
Have a good evening fellow shipmates 😀

The end is in sight?

A little bit more this afternoon, finally taking shape. Still got the railings to spray and fit, hopefully will get to have a trial manoeuvre in the test tank this weekend and if all is good in the world 🌎, she'll make her maiden voyage early September at the club.

She is looking awesome, 👍 and very inspiring for me to start my own kit but current situation does not allow me the pleasure of such a long term detailed project. I have foolishly started my first semi scratch build and already have had to many distractions. I will soon start the build blog , but for now am very much excited to see you fine efforts having a great first sea trial and many happy smooth outs after … Again Thank You

Thanks

Thanks Roger and Bill for your comments and everyone's likes. To date it's seemed a long and at times perplexing build. In my day's of youth when making plastic kit's, it always seemed to be that there was the correct amount of parts or occasionally not. With this build it appears that although I've gone through the build in my usual fashion of marking off all parts used and sections completed, I still have excess parts unaccounted for as well as a boat missing. Clearly shown in the build and the finished model on the box. Nowhere to be found, gone awol😂. I'm sure that there's probably a lot more I could add to, but for now I'm happy with what I've accomplished and can move on to finishing off other projects.

Thanks Doug

Cheers buddy, wish it was only 2 months, actually started around Christmas but couldn't get my act together. Really got into it in April after what I still believe to be a misdiagnosis from the hospital and DVLA revoked my licence prevents me from working currently so decided amongst other things to start on Nelson and bite the bullet so to speak.
Hopefully back to work soon 😊
