Hi everyone being new to the hobby I have picked an easy build to start although apparently very old plans as you can see from the photo the basic hull is nearly there just got to shape the stern as you can see I’m having to work between the dining room table and the garage at the minute It’s all been quite straight forward up to now but it’s quite apparent I need a whole new tool kit I’ve bought a few items but tried to use existing tools until I’m convinced this is the new hobby for me. I’ve received the steam plant as stated on the drawing from Tony Green it’s a bit Mamodish but that’s fine it’s a good and easy introduction. I realise I won’t be able to sail her on a model club pond in it’s current state but I’ll Finnish it to the drawing for now and maybe review it in the future. That’s all the rambling for now

Well done good start to the build. With steam you will be learning new skills. Firing your steam plant up for the first time is such a high. Mick Would you show pictures of your boiler and engine.

Hi
In response to Newby 7 photos of the steam plant. I’ve had a good day today fitted the propellor shaft, knocked up a heat shield from a shelf of an old bbq that I was throwing out and decided on a oak colour happy bunny today

Hi Tomo, and I hope you don't mind but I would like to share this with you and offer a little advice. I am pleased to see that you have your Tony Green steam plant, and I am sure you will agree it is quite basic, but on the other hand, one has to start somewhere. When steaming up the boiler disconnect the silicon tube to the engine, otherwise you will fill the engine with condensate and hydraulicly lock it up so as it won't turn, wait till the boiler is producing steam before reconnecting. An oscillating engine needs lubrication on the two faces of the cylinder and the steam chest, plus the piston in the cylinder so I suggest you fit a lubricator and use steam oil. Regards, Gary. (Besides all that it is looking very promising, keep up the good work, and well done you.)
Hi
I’ve painted the inside of the hull and then fitted the ply deck held in place with the Tesco shopping order as you an see we’ve had snow overnight. I then had a panic that maybe I should have used some varnish of some sort any thoughts on that would be welcome I can get to most of the inside with the deck on if needed. Another point would I need to do any sealing after paint on the outside of the hull.

Hi all and thanks to Gary for the reply It’s good to know where I’m going wrong and how to put it right I’m eager to learn I’ll look into lubricators. I intend to run the engine on the bench a few times to familiarise myself with it so will need to keep it well lubricated. I’ve stained and varnished the deck today I’m pleased with the results onward and upwards

Hi Tomo, and that hull is looking really neat very streamlined, and quite racy. Plus, as a bonus, you will have good access to your steam plant through that large opening in the deck. Keep up the good work as you are doing just great at figuring things out. Regards, Gary.
Hi Rick, and thanks for that comment which I really appreciate. Stay safe my friend, and take damn good care of yourself. Best regards to yourself and Nancy.
Hi thanks for the words of encouragement much needed at times I’ve been making the rear cabin found this a bit fiddly also altered the drawing slightly to make it sturdier it does have a rock to it when in place partly the cabin and I think the hull is higher one side to the other might have to fudge it a bit.question for pressonreguardless do you have any photos of your fantail steam launch I would very much like to see them
Regards to all Mick

Great job on your launch, love the deck.
Here is a picture of my Midwest launch, the original company was Laughing Whale. The motor had a problem and had to make a new one using the kit one as a quite. The person on the boat rotates back and fourth to steal the boat. This model was built in 1985 and I still have it.
Thanks for the photos por did you build it from plans and did you build the engine and boiler. As for Mabel haven’t been able to do a lot
, glued a couple of bearers to the heat shield to mount the unit to. I didn’t like the window holes in the cabin so set about making window frames

Hi Mick,
I built the Boat from Plans.
The Engine was built from a Kit.
I think it is important to one's judgment in a build, Sounds like you are on the right Track!😊😊
I found it is good to take one's time as it becomes very intense when trying to achieve the results that we want. I aways need a step back.
A bit of advice needed please I’m spraying the hull this coming week do I need to varnish on top of the paint. If so I have some yacht varnish from household use would this be any good

Couldn’t resist a mock up of the build so far. Fired up the boiler for the first time it was a bit feeble to start with but got better as it went on I’ll fire it again in the garage then connect to the prop shaft and run them in together

Hi Mick,
Looking Good!
The more you run the engine it should get better as the valve faces mate together.
On my Launch I had to re machine the faces to reduce the leakage thus providing a better seal.

Hi all been quiet on the forum of late although been doing bits on the boat when time aloud. I am now calling the project finished apart from two items first as you can see from the photos the rudder shaft is held with the brass from a electrical connector not sure what to do there I think a small thumb screw would be good secondly the boiler has a leak around a hex head screw that passes through a hinge plate and into the boiler I need to determine the thread clean it all up and seal it with loctite. Really enjoyed this first project not sure where to go next maybe find out more about radio control

That looks really great, you should be proud of yourself and your first attempt. In the future, you could always consider adding a second USE engine, which should make it self-starting
, and as I am sure you are aware the locking pin assures that you can't get it wrong, regarding the angle of the crank-pins on the two engines. Regards,Gary.
